Black Friday: Holiday Shopping Favorites for Mom
Plum District scouts the best Black Friday deals for Moms and their Family
November 21st, 2012 | 9:50 AM
Black Friday is a ritual for some, a one-time-never-again thing for others and a never-will-I-ever for more. For Mommies with bundles of joy costing them bundles of money, this sacred holiday shopping day rival’s your first born’s birth or wedding day.
We love the best door-busting big box deals just as much as the next Mom, but this year we don’t have to set the alarms or sneak out after dark. Black Friday is now Grey Thursday. Walmart, Kmart, Target, eBay and more are opening up their doors, virtually or otherwise, bright and early on Thursday for even bigger savings. So put that turkey leg down and gobble on over to your favorite discount retailer for door-busting deals for the holiest of all shopping days for deal-scouts.
Turkey? What turkey. Put that hunk of greasy meat down and find Plum District’s favorites for your holiday squeeze.
Toys R US
Toys R Us is pretty much the Mecca for savvy Mom shoppers. All those times you heard the little one scream “I want!” to the television, well you’re going to find that souvenir here.
Toys R Us Black Friday deals were leaked early, coming out with gifts like the Barbie Escalade electric ride-on car for a whopping $100 savings, a Fisher-Price Grand Dollhouse for $40 off and the Mega Blocks Halo sets discounted to 40%. Of course, while the items above might be on the kid’s kid’s wishlist, and your own Black Friday holiday shopping bundle, that doesn’t mean you have to turn your head to educational items like Disney storybooks, or essentials like classic organic clothing.
Amazon
You’re most likely a Plum District subscriber, meaning you love to shop online. Who wouldn’t? With today’s technology it’s like using a pager in the ‘90s – everyone is doing it.
So jump into holiday shopping with Amazon’s Black Friday deals that have been spreading like lighting all over the web for weeks. Amazon has been delivering serious percentages off items like the EASEL for Two at 40% off. Plus, a slew of Blu-ray titles are marked for just $3.99, in addition to the video games, music and movies – like The Avengers, Lady and the Tramp, Rio and Ice Age – that’ll be low, low, low. Be weary, though – certain titles have specific time slots for purchasing (just a head’s up, The Smurfs will be from 12:20-4:20pm on Thursday). Just make sure the kid’s don’t catch Santa in the act!

Walmart
We’re never surprised when Black Friday deals are leaked; Walmart will always remain at the top of our lists. Amid reports of a strike, Walmart stays true with mega discounts on electronics, toys and essentials. We love the Little Tikes Gourmet Prep n’ Serve Kitchen for $50 and can’t help but unleash a little squeal with the Fisher-Price Learning Farm for $40. Oh yeah, and selected Barbie’s are $5 each. Never one to disappoint, Walmart also reveals a slew of stocking stuffer art supplies like the Crayola® Twistables Color Wheel for $8.88 or Crayola® Wonder Value Kits at just under $20. See more of the Walmart Black Friday deals at Black Friday headquarters.

DIY Ideas for Repurposing Those Pumpkins
Plum District picks our favorite DIY pumpkin recipes, pumpkin centerpieces and festive fall decor for repurposing Halloween pumpkins
November 8th, 2012 | 2:05 PM
All Hollow’s Eve went off without a hitch, but there are still remnants of the Lycra overload around every corner. It’s hard not to complain about that leftover bag of bite-size candy bars hidden in the freezer, but the excess pumpkins and gourds collected throughout the month may have seen their last days.
If the carving was left for the little ones, your own superfluous decorative pumpkins lying around the house need to recharge in anticipation of the mashed potatoes and turkey leg dwellers. We’ll be honest, we can never turn down a unique gourd when heading to the pumpkin patch with the kiddos, but the stacks sitting adjacent to the fireplace or welcoming relatives at the front door need a boost of confidence come November 22.
Scouting out our favorite DIY tips and pumpkin recipes for the fall, we came up with a list of some pumpkin prescriptions to lead you away from the holiday of horror into the one of thanks.
Pumpkin & Cheese Spice Bread {Insider tip: The bread is moist and delicious, and perfect for Thanksgiving morning!}
Yields 3 mini loaves (the mini loaf pans I use are 5 3/4 inches long X 3 inches wide X 2 inches deep)
For the Cheese Batter:
8 oz cream cheese, room temperature
1 large egg, room temperature, lightly beaten
1/4 cup powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
For the Pumpkin Spice Batter:
3/4 cup brown sugar, lightly packed
2 large eggs
3/4 cup pumpkin puree
2 tablespoons canola oil
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ginger
1/8 teaspoon cloves
Other:
Butter, to grease the pans
For the Cheese Batter: Use a handheld electric mixer to beat together all ingredients until smooth and creamy.
For the Pumpkin Spice Batter: Preheat oven to 350F; lightly grease 3 mini loaf pans with butter.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the brown sugar and eggs until light and fluffy, then stir in the pumpkin, canola oil, and vanilla. In a separate bowl, whisk or sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves. Gradually stir the dry ingredients into the wet, being careful not to over-mix. Divide the pumpkin batter between the 3 loaf pans, then pour the cheese batter on top.
Bake until golden around the edges, about 35 to 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted inside comes out clean or with just a couple crumbs. Cool 10 minutes in the pans, then remove from the pans and transfer to a wire rack to finish cooling.

DIY Garlands, Wreaths or Floral Arrangements
There’s nothing more seasonal than a fresh and festive wreath hanging from your front door, or an aromatic floral arrangement siting in your entryway. Don’t trash those mini-pumpkins just yet, but save them up for a weekend DIY that involves some moss, a wire wreath frame and big burlap bow. Put it all together for an inspiring piece of décor everyone will want to give thanks to.

Table-Toppers

We might have said table-topping your Thanksgiving feast with leftovers was lame, but Better Homes & Gardens has put on a new spin on the traditional topper. By adding bits and pieces of your signature holiday decorations, along with color-coordinated pumpkins, you’re sure to hear the “oohs” and “aahs” of approval before dinner is even served. Tie in an accent color that shows off your finest China, and mix with colors, shapes and height to create a festive Thanksgiving centerpiece that starts and ends the conversation.

Pumpkin Paint
We like the idea of a glitzed and glamorous home, and this season the repurpose pumpkin trend went glam. From glitter to gold and florescent ombre hues to vegetables dripping in jewels, turn any pumpkins that remain into something that elicits fear into a classy neighborhood friend. With a few crafty techniques, this simple pumpkin DIY easily coordinates with your table setting to create a sensational conversation starter before the first course hits.

In case you missed it, here’s some BIG news from our CEO:
The thought of growing and seeing a team reach full potential has always been what gets me out of bed every morning. As CEO of Plum District, I’ve had the pleasure of building a team of women across the country who are as motivating as they are talented; as loving as they are successful; and who are truly dedicated to Making Mom’s Day every single day.
This Spring, I found out I was going to build a different kind of team. I was going to build a family. My wonderfully supportive husband and I are expecting our very first baby this November and….it’s a girl!

I’ve been fueling my tank with orange juice, a fair bit of spicy food and cupcakes, but what has fueled me the most has been knowing that there are more than one million moms in the Plum District family who have also gone down this same incredible road.
The creative juices are flowing more than ever and as my baby bump as been growing and growing, so has Plum District. In the coming weeks, we’ll be bringing you better savings, greater brands and other ways to make your day, Mom.
As my family continues to grow, so does ours at Plum District – thank you for being a part of it.

Welcome Home World Series San Francisco Giants
Plum District San Francisco home team welcomes World Series Champions San Francisco Giants
October 31st, 2012 | 5:27 PM
We are officially welcoming you back to the Plum District blog with a celebration fit for champions.
We have hundreds of Moms like you scouting out the best deals in their local communities to fill your inboxes with lots of fun goodies, but there are also a handful of us that work at our home office in San Francisco. As it so happens, today not only marks All Hallow’s Eve but another celebration we Bay Area residents have come to expect in last few years – the San Francisco Giants World Series Championship parade.
Black and orange streaked the town on a day fitting for outlandish costumes. The Plum District team here watched from our 11th floor windows, cheering along as confetti decorated the San Francisco skyline. Our team is pretty fortunate to work in the heart of the Financial District and parade route, and wore black and orange – along with a few other quirky ensembles – to honor the San Francisco home team.
The baseball season might be over, and the World Series Champions, the San Francisco Giants, might have already passed through the middle of town, but we say hello to a new chapter at Plum District. We are excited to offer you a whole new way to share on Plum District – share us your thoughts, your ideas, your favorite brands and more.
Welcome back World Series Champs, and welcome back to our blog Plum District!

Beat the Summer Heat!
We have some creative ways to cool down when temperatures outside are soaring.
August 3rd, 2012 | 2:41 PM
Summer makes us think of one thing – hot, hot, hot weather! This year has been exceptionally warm and toasty for certain parts of the United States and you’re running out of creative ways to beat the beat! You can’t control Mother Nature, but you can control how you chill out. Here are some tips and ideas to enjoy cooler, more fun summer days without everyone melting!
- Fill water balloons and chill them in the fridge for a few minutes before breaking into teams for a friendly water fight in the back yard.
- Turn on the sprinklers and play favorite outdoor games while getting soaked – tag, red rover, soccer and touch football are a few!

- Tackle those chores! Wash the car and let the kids manage the hose. Everyone is sure to get sprayed!
- Put your favorite yogurt in the freezer for an hour, then voila! Icy, tasty frozen yogurt. Even yummier – sprinkle dark chocolate chips on top.
- Fill a pitcher with water and slices of your favorite fruit. Sweet, refreshing and hydrating – the kids will gulp it up like juice, but it doesn’t have all that sugar!

- On warm nights, set up the tent and have a good old fashioned camp out.
- Most local ice rinks stay open year-round. Dig out the long sleeve shirts and go for an afternoon or arctic fun!
- When you go to the beach, station your chair in the surf so the water washes up to your feet every time.

- Inflate the baby pools and unfold the slip and slides. Gather with neighbors and dump bath toys in each pool, so all the kids can play and splash.
- Instead of cranking up your A/C at home, stroll through the mall or catch the hot new summer flick at the theater.
- And last, but definitely not least, nothing beats a cannonball or diving competition in the neighborhood pool!
We’d love to know how your family creatively beats the heat. Let us know!

Olympic Worthy Snacks
In honor the London 2012 Olympics, here's some tasty (and healthy) snacks to nosh on while you watch world-class athletes compete over the next two weeks.
July 30th, 2012 | 5:05 PM
As the Olympics open we are all prompted to reflect on our own athletic pasts; however embarrassing or glorified. Like many kids, my professional athletic career started with soccer at the age of five. I took to the field ready to obliterate my opponents, or at least remember not to pick the ball up. Soccer is a wonderful sport, and in my time I think I was successful at missing every finer point of the sport. But I was always focused on the chief aspect of the game – half-time snacks.
Whether your little one is swimming lengths or hitting the links; they need fuel. And no self-respecting mom wants to have “the bad snack” when it’s their turn to feed the Olympic hopefuls. Here are some new spins on those tried and true snacks, along with simple switches to make your version truly tournament-worthy.

Fruit S’mores
Having a hard time convincing the kiddos that fruit is fun? They’ll be coming back for seconds when you make snacks interactive. Cut up strawberries, kiwis, apple slices, pineapple, watermelon, and grapes — then throw in some marshmallows all into different bowls. Then have everyone pick out their favorites and make color patterns. Put them on a wooden kabob stick and – voila! – fruit is suddenly a little more tasty. To discourage browning on the apples, apply lemon or lime juice to the slices. The acid dispels the browning enzyme and you can dilute it 3 parts water to 1 part juice to avoid the acidic flavor.
Ants on a Log
This snack has been a way to trick children into eating celery for years and with so many different spreads to choose from you can really mix it up. Put out peanut butter, cream cheese and Nutella along with a variety of toppings like raisins, cranberries, or chocolate chips. Mix and match accordingly!

Yogurt Delights
For a refreshing dessert that is also healthy whip up some Yogurt Delights. It’s easy — take some Greek yogurt and make a base in a small cup, then layer it with fruits like oranges or raspberries. After each layer add another layer of yogurt. Add a garnish to the top (chocolate shavings round it out nicely) then settle in to watch some gymnastics or swimming!
What are some of your favorite go to healthy snacks? We’d love to know!

Plum District Counts Down to the 2012 Olympic Games
Behind every great athlete is someone who believes in them.
July 23rd, 2012 | 2:43 PM
Being a Mom is truly the best job. It’s hardly the most glamorous, but it’s always the most rewarding. So when Proctor and Gamble led a “Best Job” campaign in collaboration with the 2012 Summer Olympics that showcased the powerhouse behind each Olympic athlete, we were thrilled here at Plum District.
We always love sharing the power of the Mom. Now it’s your turn to share the power of the individual with your children as the countdown to the 2012 Summer Olympics begins. As the world’s best athletes parade this summer on screen, now is the time to teach them about endurance, strength, fortitude, and passion.
With the backbone of a great Mom like you, children can learn successful characteristics of a determined, dedicated, and powerful athlete — Olympic material or not. Lead a discussion in your house as you catch gymnasts, swimmers, runners, cyclists and others perform.
It’s not hard to get excited about the Summer Olympics — whether your family has decided to make a nightly ritual of watching the athletes perform or you’re planning on throwing a party for the kickoff event on July 27 – the world stage is set for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Go get ‘em, Mom!

Plum District moms speak out about getting ready for the big first day!
July 18th, 2012 | 10:47 PM
We’ve been all about “Back to School” at Plum District lately, and we’ve come up with some amazing offers for savvy school shoppers. But all this school talk has led to some really interesting discussions about what it means to start a new school year. It seems that across our office, everyone has experienced really different emotions towards going back to school. So we decided to consult the experts—our moms–and get the full report on how everyone feels about the big day.
You and your child are probably equally concerned about the social scene. Nervousness about making friends, being picked on, and fitting in transcends all ages. In fact, 46% of our moms were the most concerned with their student making friends or being bullied. But the largest single concern, coming in at 28%, was whether or not the kids would have a good teacher. Your kid, on the other hand, probably just wants her/him to be “nice.”
Each year of school is a huge step for you and your little ones; it involves a lot of planning and a lot of emotions. We’ve been working just as hard to drum up the best offers to make your life a little easier. But all of our brainstorming begins with what our mothers need. Read below to see the rest of our moms’ report on that big first day. Then let us know what you’re worried about or share some back to school stories! You know we love to hear them.
