The majority of recipients have hair loss due to an auto-immune condition known as Alopecia Areata, and others suffer from severe burns, radiation treatment, and other dermatological conditions. Our Denver team was touched by the sea of pink and white at the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure

Besides changing leaves and cooler temps, one of the tell-tale signs of October is PINK. I walked into my local Safeway yesterday and noticed all the cash registers had special pink notices, bracelets for sale, and pink re-usable grocery bags. Safeway is a major sponsor for Susan G Komen’s Denver Affiliate. You turn on football and on a given Sunday in October, the players are decked out in Pink gloves, pink socks … looks cute.
Everybody knows what the pink means – breast cancer awareness. And a lot of people have a relative, a friend, or just an acquaintance that has been afflicted with the illness. I have to admit, I am one of the lucky ones. There is no history of breast cancer in my family and only this year did I have my first close encounter with the disease when my 43-year-old sister-in-law caught a lump super early. She had stage 1 cancer but was able to successfully treat it with radiation. Thank goodness, as she is the mother of 8 year old twins.
None of this common experience we all share prepared me for what I saw today. Plum District had a booth at Denver’s Race for the Cure. I knew they were expecting 50,000 participants as one of the most active races across the country. But it wasn’t until the women started walking up to our booth at 6:30 am that I realized what a horrible disease breast cancer is and how it inspires so many people. It was a sea of women in white and pink shirts – white if you were walking for a family member that lost their battle and pink if you were a survivor. I am not sure which one moved me more? It may have been the 75-year-old plus woman in her pink shirt with her daughter who wore a white shirt. The daughters’ white shirt listed a sister, an aunt, a grandmother, and a cousin, all of whom had died of breast cancer. And here she was with her mother; an eight-year breast cancer survivor, out here today for her eighth walk. What inspiration and hope.
I feel so proud that Plum District is participating in the fight by donating a percent of our profits from this week’s deals in Denver. It may not be much compared to the thousands raised today in Denver, but every bit helps. While strides have been made in breast cancer research I saw WAY too many white shirts today. I hope one day to attend the race and see nothing but pink shirts.
