Skincare Tips from Plum District's Experts - Our Moms!
April 11th, 2012 | 3:06 PM
Ah, post-winter skin. That pastiness! That flakiness! That general ickiness! After a few months bracing harsh winds and soppy snow, your face could use some major TLC. Of course, year-round skin care is a vital part of maintaining a healthy complexion. We chatted with some of Plum District’s trusted network of Moms to get their tips for healthy, gorgeous skin for the whole family.
Melissa Carlisle – (District Consultant – Dallas)
My biggest skin secret is to exfoliate, wash and moisturize. Yes, ma’am, the exact same advice your mother probably gave you as a 12 or 13-year-old girl. But the truth of it is, there’s a reason for each step. When you skip a step, your skin pays the consequences.
Deb Clem – (Regional Manager – Kansas City)
I grew up in the 80′s when it was still cool to slather on the baby oil and bake in the sun. My mom always made us wear sunblock when we played tennis (which was so uncool) but I thank her now as my 40-something year-old mommy skin looks great. I wear SPF every single day and as the sun’s rays get warmer in the spring, I make sure that we’re all covered and that there’s plenty in my tennis bag. My other tip for great skin: water. Nothing gives you a springtime glow better than hydration.
Shannon Vetter – (District Consultant, Frederick, MD)
Springtime can be a difficult and deceiving time for us moms to adequately protect our kids from the sun. It can be cool and breezy and still the sun can do damage to our kids’ skin. My second daughter is so fair, with pale skin, blue eyes, blond hair (the kind we pay for with BIG bucks!) and freckles. I always think of her as the barometer for the five of us. If I adequately protect her, then we are all fine. I put Neutrogena face 70 SPF sunscreen on everyone including myself.
I always use the lotion, rather than the spray. I think that the sprays create a lot of waste. It takes a bit more time to slather up the kids with the lotion, but then I know they are covered and protected…at least for the next two hours when I need to re-apply!
Some of our favorite style picks in pastels we love
April 8th, 2012 | 12:25 AM
You don’t have to feel like an Easter egg in order to rock some fabulous spring shades. Soft hues of blue, yellow, lavender, and pink practically scream “So long, Winter!”, but too much pastel can be a candy-colored overload.
The key to any look? Moderation! O Magazine suggests that you try pastel accents in the form of accessories, or pair them with black or gray for a more contemporary look. Try sporting a soft, daffodil-colored T-shirt underneath your work blazer, or tuck a baby blue blouse into a sleek pair of charcoal trousers.
Love the idea of softening your look, but uncomfortable with deviating from your daily uniform? This season’s hottest make-up trends are actually cool! Pearly shades of pastel glosses, shadows, and polishes can give you a springy break from your regular makeup routine – without making you feel like a human jelly bean. Harper’s Bazaar recommends fun and flirty shades of pink for your lips and cheeks, while your eyes can have it all! Play around with bird’s egg blue, seafoam green, or peach. For a fun splash of multi-colored magic, try painting each of your nails a different shade of the pastel palette – a conversation starter that’s pretty and playful.

You conquered the back-to-school rush, so we're helping you give yourself a fabulous fall
September 8th, 2011 | 2:43 PM
With summer ending, most moms’ attentions are focused (where else?) on their kids. Sometimes I think my life as a startup CEO is busy, but at this time of year, mom’s job as “Chief Everything Officer” really hits a new level of hectic. The rush of finishing up summer activities and winding down vacations led right into preparing for back-to-school: shopping … clothes … school supplies … haircuts … doctors’ appointments … and more. Now, school is finally here. Before you get caught up in the routines of carpool and after-school activities and sports and playdates, we’d like to help you think about someone you’ve probably been ignoring — yourself!
Plum District is really excited to celebrate the coming of autumn with a whole week of deals, from Sept. 12 – 18, focused on pampering yourself and making your day a little easier. During Fall Into Fabulous week, you’ll find great deals on ways to treat yourself, including spas, salons, yoga classes, and clothing boutiques, to name a few. Nationally, we’ll be offering discounts on Ice, Cilea, JustFabulous shoes, Beyond the Rack, WorldwideFlowers.com, and more.
You deserve to make fall a fabulous time. You’ve planned and prepared for everyone else, Chief Everything Officer. It’s time to take a moment for yourself!
Being a busy mom has its perks.

Being a busy mom has its perks. There’s never a dull moment. I get to carry around adorable organizational accessories. I can tell my husband to order dinner in because I’m too tired to cook. And I can pull the “me time” card when things get too hectic.
When it’s time to spend time on me, I tend to do something like get a pedicure or go shopping. But one of my favorite “me time” activities is sending everyone out of the house so I can stay in. Being alone in a quiet house is my favorite way to wind down. I can eat ice cream in bed and watch sappy movies. I can walk around in my underpants or stay in my jammies all day (I tend to do this anyway…ha!). I can just be me without worrying for a moment.
And in this moment, I’m only thinking about me. It’s ok – we can do that sometimes. So let me share with you one of my new found favorite deal sites and maybe you’ll think about you too.
We’ve all seen group shopping and discount sites, but we’ve not seen one like Plum District. The ladies at Plum District have taken the time to sort out the joys of “mom time” and “me time” and have created deals specifically tailored to my needs. I’m having a hard time deciding what items I want to spend my account dollars on! How about you? Don’t you deserve some “me time” too?

Who doesn’t need a change of scenery sometimes, especially in the home?

room for under $100.
The truth is, who doesn’t need a change of scenery sometimes, especially in the home? But then, we look at our bank accounts and realize that our dreams of the perfectly revamped room might be more of a financial nightmare. What I say to this, my friends, is THINK AGAIN … avoid the pitfall of believing a big transformation must come with a huge price tag.
into your DREAM room!!!

STEP TWO: Put Some “Pretty” On It!
In this picture Chalk Board paint was used for the accent wall.
Here is a Before and After paint job…I’m just saying
STEP THREE: K.I.S.S. (Keep It Super Simple)
Check out how these pillows give a neutral space some POP!
Here is an example of bed sheets as curtains
I love how they used a simple kaki fabric for these curtains
In the end, it’s all about making your house feel more like a home. Keeping it simple and finding creative ways to use what you already have. Then go out and spend a little money on those things you absolutely LOVE and, of course, need
You’ll be surprised that a little bit of elbow grease and creativity can go a long, long way.
What does a “deal” mean to you?
July 14th, 2011 | 2:42 PM
What does a “deal” mean to you? Something special? Hard to find? An accomplishment? The dictionary defines ‘deal’ as, “a usually large or indefinite quantity or degree.” That certainly rings true. For the average mom, I think it means financial empowerment. When we think smart with our buying power and make the effort to get the most for our money, we are embracing one of the best things we can do for our families: be economically responsible.
Deals are hot right now, especially in the current economic climate, and Plum District is meeting a need that moms are really clamoring for. Whether we work full-time, part-time, or as a stay-at-home mom, we so often take the reins when it comes to purchasing saavy on behalf of our kids… and ourselves. Whether we seek clothes or ice cream, school supplies or a Saturday matinee, maximizing the dollar is where it’s at. Not to mention, those little “me” splurges that moms certainly need every once in a while. Manicure anyone? With all those demands on our day-to-day budgets why “waste” money when you don’t have to?
Moms can and do take charge to save money on all kinds of products and services for their kids and themselves. They are empowered, thanks to Plum District – a benefit to kids and families any way you look at it.
