This week at Plum District we are doing something big. We are partnering with FamilyCord to provide discount of half off cord-blood collection and storage services for expecting moms. Cord-blood collection can be pricey — usually about $2,000 ($4,000 if you have twins like I do!). As parents we want to have the best medical options for our kids, but sometimes the investment can be a barrier to getting them.
To be able to offer families this choice makes me realize how much I love my job—this week I get to offer a deal that could really make a difference in the long run!
Umbilical-cord blood offers a controversy-free source of stem cells, which scientists agree are one of the most promising medical therapies. They’re currently used to treat 80 life-threatening disorders including cancers, immune-system deficiencies, and bone-marrow deficiencies. There is also research being conducted into their use to treat cerebral palsy, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and spinal-cord injury.
As parents, we hope that collecting cord blood is a precaution that we will never have to use. If that time should come, though, we want families to have the choice to prepare themselves with the best medical options.
This is an important decision so please do your research! This offer will be available for a full week. We visited the Family Cord cryobank a number of times and saw firsthand why it is respected as one of the world’s leading facilities for cord-blood stem-cell collection, processing, and storage. The only doctor-owned and -operated facility serving all 50 states and more than 30 countries worldwide, Family Cord has earned its reputation.

Dear Plum District community members,
Today we ran a Plum Reward deal that gave our members the opportunity to earn a $20 Target GiftCard for referring four new users to our site. While, to this point, thousands of people have successfully earned a gift card through this reward, we’re also keenly aware that many people were frustrated, angered, and disappointed with their experience with our deal today. For that we are genuinely sorry.
We want to thank you for being part of our community, for recommending us to your friends and family, and for trusting us to offer you discounts on products and services that we think will make your lives easier and more enjoyable. We take your trust seriously and pledge to work every day to keep it.
As for our deal today, we’ve seen accusations that it was some kind of scam. It wasn’t, and thousands of people will soon be receiving their gift cards in the mail. We don’t yet know exactly how many people will get them, and that’s part of the problem. People are still using active referral links and we are still tallying deal statistics. More frustratingly, the number of visitors to our site today overwhelmed our capabilities; we underestimated the popularity of this deal. The traffic prevented our system from accurately updating people on the number of referrals they had reached. As many of you found out, our email system slowed to a crawl and set off spam alarms at several email providers, Yahoo in particular. We’re working with our email provider, SendGrid, to resolve some issues that are still outstanding, but can’t say that we’ve eliminated them all as of now. We’ll keep working.
We also can’t yet say with certainty who will and won’t earn a Plum Reward from today’s deal. We know many people, particularly on the East Coast, are waiting late into the night for information. Unfortunately, we don’t have it for you at this time. What we can say is that we hope that each person who referred friends in good faith today will earn a Plum Reward.
Again, if you felt short-changed by your experience with Plum District, we sincerely apologize. Though we may have fallen short for some of you tonight, our experience helped us put in place more robust systems that will make future deals easier and smoother for you. Thank you for your business and for all of your referrals. We will update you tomorrow with more information.

That mom-to-be Natalie Portman wore plum to the Oscars last night. Could it have been a coincidence that she chose to swathe herself in the new official color of savvy moms everywhere (and looked damn good doing it) on the night she took home the statue for Best Actress? Sure, anything’s possible. But we’d like to think that she did so because she knows where it’s all happening.
Congrats from all of us, Natalie, on your win, and best wishes for a happy, healthy motherhood! If you want an in on the stuff that’ll make your life as a mom a little easier and more enjoyable, come on by the website. We’ll hook you up.

Hi everyone! We’re really psyched that so many people across the country are excited by today’s Plum Reward for a CPK Gift Card, but we’ve noticed that a few people are trying to grab more than their share. This opportunity is limited to one per person and one per household. We want everyone to earn a gift card, but please respect our community and follow the rules of the deal. Even if you figure out how to game our site to snag more than one card for this Plum Reward, we have multiple mechanisms in place to eliminate duplicate recipients before we fulfill our deals, and you will only receive one in the mail.
We’ve had some questions from users regarding referrals for this Plum Reward. Plum Reward referrals are separate from other Plum District referral bonuses (like Plum Dollars). To refer friends for this Reward, you must use the email form or links that you’re presented after you click “Get It” on the deal page. Don’t use the “Refer a Friend and Get $10″ link in the top page navigation to refer friends to get your gift card –those count as separate referrals.
Thanks to everybody who’s been spreading the word about this great Plum Reward. If you’re new to our site, welcome. If you’ve already earned your gift card, way to go! If not … good luck. We’re rooting for you!

Socrates (or maybe it was Prince) once said, “Two thousand zero zero, party over … oops, out of time.” Not wanting the clock to run out on our fun, last week the denizens of Plum District HQ partied like it was
1999 December 2011.
We’d been so busy last month — moving offices, forging new relationships with vendors, inventing squishy, new phases of matter — that we couldn’t corral everyone long enough for a holiday party. So we made up for it with our Holidays in January party (perhaps the first of a new annual tradition?), at Laszlo in the Mission. Hard to sum up in words, but it was a night full of this:
aaaand some of this:
and oh yeah, a bow tie:
And did we get Megan a gift?
Yes. And was it a purple kimono?
Our web producer Melissa gets a special shout-out for organizing the shindig. Thanks, Melissa! So while it’s a little belated, the PD office toasts everyone in The District, wishing you a belated Happy Holidays and Happy New Year. Are we ready for 2011?
Oh yes. Stay tuned!

Today was quite the day here at Plum HQ: our first day in our new (temporary) offices!
We moved our belongings from the old place Friday afternoon, and started fresh today at a new address. It’s one of those office spaces built specifically for startups, with lots of small companies packed next to one another and common areas for mingling and “idea cross-pollination.” (For the uninitiated, that’s when two people meet at the coffee machine. One says, “We do web work,” and the other says, “So do we!”)
There were a few fits and starts, which are to be expected when you move (Where is the bathroom, anyway?), but overall things went quite smoothly.
Being the adventurous sort, we had to get out and explore. Our fearless leader, Megan, devised a scavenger hunt to get the entire team acquainted with our new surroundings. Because she’s crafty, the hunt also had an ulterior motive: to compile a list of places that we’ll find useful. Rachel and Dave took care of finding the most important one:
So for a couple hours we found ourselves running around the building introducing ourselves to the neighbors (some took it better than others and were rewarded with super-luxe Plum District re-usable bags) and wandering the streets searching for the best spots to park, eat, shop, work out, grab coffee, and the like. I think our experience in sniffing out great deals for moms came in pretty handy here…we found quite a bunch! You can bet we’ll be spending lots of lunch money here:
The winning team (Tizzy, Margaret, and me) gets to buy something fun for the permanent office we’ll be moving into soon. Can’t wait to see what we come up with…In the meantime: look out, neighborhood! Plum District is here!
