Hannah Schardt is mom to two children: 4-year old daughter Rebecca and 6-year-old son August. She’s also Senior Editor of the award-winning, kids’ nature magazine, Ranger Rick. We connected with Hannah to learn about her family, career, and inspirations:
Plum District: How did you get started?
Hannah: Soon after I finished journalism school, I moved from the Bay Area to DC to be with my now-husband. After we got married, I started at National Wildlife, the adult magazine of the National Wildlife Federation. When the job at Ranger Rick came open, I jumped at the chance. I grew up reading Ranger Rick and my kids love the magazine, so it seemed like a perfect fit.
Plum District: What do you like about working on Ranger Rick Magazine?
Hannah: It’s a rare job that lets me combine the two things I’m always thinking about anyway: kids and writing. Also, I love animals but don’t have an extensive background in biology, so every article I research and write is full of surprises for me.
Plum District: What inspires you?
Hannah: I love to listen in when my kids are talking to each other. It reminds me of how children’s brains really work and inspires me to write stories that appeal to those brains—not just to my own. Their conversations are also usually really funny.
Plum District: What advice do you have for other (working) moms?
Hannah: Figure out what is really important to you and let some of the other stuff slide. That may mean that your hair is always in a ponytail or your kitchen floor doesn’t stand up to close examination, but if the kids are happy and your partner still wants to hang out with you, you are doing fine.
Ranger Rick and Ranger Rick Jr. teach kids about nature through engaging wildlife content that’s free of distracting advertisements. Each issue contains spectacular animal photos and fun facts that instill in kids respect for the natural world around them. Children also love reading Ranger Rick’s wildlife learning adventures, which reveal dozens of nature mysteries and marvels. And perhaps most importantly, Ranger Rick presents parents and their kids with an opportunity to bond through joint learning, as they read inspiring wildlife stories and enjoy the magazine’s entertaining, nature-themed activities.
Today, Plum District members can enjoy a 1-year subscription (10 issues) to either Ranger Rick or Ranger Rick Jr. for just $12. CLICK HERE to save an exclusive 70% off a 1-year subscription!
